Four Ways to Save on Gas

While prices fluctuate and never stay the same, the one constant regarding gas is that we all need it to get around. Whether we’re driving to work, running errands, or going on trips, a few simple changes in your driving lifestyle can add up to big cost savings when it comes to gas. Below are four ways you can save money on gas this summer season.

1. Take it Slow

Slow and steady might not win any races on the road, but practicing smoother, more easy-going driving habits can lighten the load on your bank account. On the opposite side of the spectrum is aggressive driving, which has been proven to cause higher rates of gas consumption. Aggressive driving can be characterized by rapid acceleration and braking and generally high speeds.

2. Timing is Everything

With summer officially in full swing, it’s more important now than ever to be mindful of the time of day at which you purchase gas. Gas density is lowest at lower temperatures, which allows you to get more of it when you pump. To ensure the best bang for your buck, pump gas early or later in the day and avoid the hottest hours.

In addition, gas pricing typically gets higher during the weekend and the days leading up to it. If you only need to get gas once a week, do it on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday to ensure you’re getting the lowest price.

3. Gentle Braking

Braking sharply requires far more fuel consumption than braking gradually. It’s also harder on your braking system and causes tremendous wear and tear on your vehicle’s brake pads. By practicing a few good braking habits, such as braking earlier and allowing greater distances between you and the vehicle in front of you, you can eliminate much of this wear and tear and consume gas at a lesser rate.

4. Smartphone Apps for Smarter Fuel Purchasing

We use mobile apps to make our lives easier. Why not use a mobile app to find the best gas prices? Multiple apps, such as GasBuddy, are available for iPhone and/or Android devices and allow consumers to locate both the least expensive gas prices and the nearest gas stations.

For the majority of Americans, gas is an unavoidable expense, but following these steps will help you save big in the long run. There are, of course, maintenance considerations when it comes to gas consumption, such as tire alignment and inflation, air filter replacement, and general tune-ups.
